topographies – Pink Thoughts [Review]

Pink Thoughts is the debut single from topographies; it is dream pop with a post punk edge.

The band have managed to make 80s style music but with their own modern twist. The song begins with powerful percussion and a memorising guitar riff. It’s paired with ethereal vocals, and plenty of distortion to give the track that dream-like vibe.

Though the band are from San Francisco, they have taken plenty of influences from across the pond in the UK.  topographies describe their music as shoegaze. If you’re unfamiliar with this style of music, it’s a subgenre of indie and alternative rock, which started in the UK during the late 1980s.

With this knowledge in mind, you can really hear the influences of My Bloody Valentines, Ride and Slowdive throughout the track.

The song would make a fine addition to a chilled playlist, and hopefully will bring a whole new range of fans to this style of music.
