The Haunt – Cigarettes & Feelings [Review]

Sibling fronted teen outfit The Haunt release new single Cigarettes & Feelings.

The Haunt - "Cigarettes & Feelings" (Official Music Video)

Formely known as AnastasiaMax, The Haunt have followed up from their ominous, orchestral debut track ‘Why Are You So Cold’ with their latest pop-infused single ‘Cigarettes and Feelings’.

The duo is reveling in their youth. Aged just 16 (Anastasia) and 20 (Max), they are thriving on their energy and have channeled teenage angst into this new high intensity pop anthem. It is a seamless infusion of motown rhythms and indie pop hooks overarched with a welcome slice of gothic attitude you could expect from Lorde or post-punk outfit Choirboy.

The siblings’ vocals weave together immaculately, similar to those of The XX, and are mature and direct in their approach, surpassing the collective age of the duo. The songwriting is equally as refined and established. We rise from a shared-vocal verse into the oh-so catchy chorus with a break in which Anastasia whispers ‘caught in the middle’ with more confidence and sass than I had in my little finger at the age of 16.

Co-existing with the single is the The Haunts music video, reminiscent of the French new wave films of the 50s and 60s. It follows the bizarre love-triangle between front-woman Anastasia, the nicotine-addicted alien Alfonzo and Anastasia’s new love interest.

The Haunt are currently in the studio recording their sophomore EP with Matt Good, producer for Asking Alexandra and The World Alive.
