Belako – Maskenfreiheit [Review]

Belako, the Basque country band who don’t need to hide behind any masks to express their liberty are back with their exceptional new single, ‘Maskenfreiheit’.

The name of the song, ‘Maskenfreiheit’ means the freedom conferred by wearing masks. Following the context of the song, this implies how politicians keep up facades of being righteous and fair which then allow them to be quietly corrupt whilst hiding under their masks. It’s a powerful analogy which suits the tone of the song entirely.

One word to describe this song would be: intense. It’s the kind of song that keeps you on your toes from the beginning, right through till the end. The feel of the song, written about a corrupt politician running from justice, is really brought through from the powerful and electrifying sound of the guitars, displaying the anger that Belako seem to be showing in the face of injustice and corruption.

The Basque country post-punk rockers are such an interesting band to listen to as they are so experimental in their music. Their new album, ‘Render Me Numb, Trivial Violence’ released on 23rd February holds promise of nothing less than brilliance and I can’t wait to hear more of their tunes!
